Transport & race tips

Plan your journey with purpose and ease. From making conscious travel choices to fine-tuning your mental focus, we are here to support your commitment to a healthy, sustainable, and unforgettable European running experience.
Getting THERE

Madrid's extensive rail network makes it easy to reach the city for the marathon. High-speed AVE trains from across Spain arrive at Madrid Atocha or Chamartín stations. From there, connect via Cercanías commuter trains or Metro lines 1 or 10 to the city center. Book tickets early on Renfe's website, as demand spikes near race day (April 26, 2026). Expect 20-40 minutes from major stations to the start area near Paseo de la Castellana.

Driving to Madrid is feasible but not ideal on race day due to road closures around the start (Puerta de Alcalá) and finish (Retiro Park). Use the A-2 or R-2 highways from the north/east. Park at secure lots like those at IFEMA or Plaza de Castilla (book via Parclick app). Avoid driving into the city center—traffic jams and restrictions will add stress. Opt for drop-off points outside closures and switch to public transport.

Madrid-Barajas (MAD) is 20-30 km from the marathon start. Take the Metro Line 8 from terminals to Nuevos Ministerios (25 minutes, €5), then switch to Line 10 toward Gregorio Marañón. Taxis or Uber cost €30-40 and take 30-45 minutes, but surges are common. For early flights, night buses (N4) run from 00:30. Renting a car adds hassle with airport traffic—stick to trains for efficiency.

The best way to arrive at the start on race day morning is by using the Metro de Madrid.

The closest station is Gregorio Marañón (Lines 7 and 10), located just steps from the start area and the best option for most runners.

Depending on your line of arrival, you may also consider:
Rubén Darío (Line 5) – around a 7–8 minute walk
Alonso Cano (Line 7) – about a 10 minute walk
Iglesia (Line 1) – roughly a 12 minute walk

Many surrounding streets will be closed to traffic, so public transport remains the most reliable and stress-free way to reach the start. Plan your route in advance, allow extra time, and follow signage and volunteer guidance once you exit the station.

Arriving by metro means a smoother start to your race day — and more energy saved for the course ahead. This cuts emissions and avoids parking woes. Use the EMT app for real-time updates.

Race day tips

Race day is finally here — the streets are alive, the energy is contagious, and months of training are about to unfold across one unforgettable journey through Madrid.

Start the morning calmly. Wake up with enough time to eat your familiar pre-race breakfast, hydrate well, and arrive at the start area without rushing. Nerves are normal, but trust your preparation — you’ve done the work.

In the early kilometers, hold back slightly. Madrid’s course rewards patience. Run by effort, not excitement, and let the race come to you. A controlled start will pay off when the course begins to demand more in the later stages.

Use the crowds as fuel. Madrid is known for its passionate spectators, music, and vibrant neighborhoods. Let their energy lift you, especially on the climbs. Smile, stay relaxed, and remember to check in with your breathing and posture.

Stick to your nutrition and hydration plan. Don’t experiment on race day — take what you trained with, at the moments you planned. Small, consistent fueling makes a big difference in the final 10 kilometers.

Most importantly, enjoy the experience. Running a marathon is never just about the finish time — it’s about the journey, the atmosphere, and the personal story you carry to the finish line.

Because it’s not just a race. It’s Madrid.
